Laminate benchtop are a great alternative to stone and should not be disregarded so easily.
They are a lot more cost-effective than stone and are ideal for refreshing rental properties or sprucing up your place if you are intending to sell. Laminate benchtop can also be easily removed if you choose to upgrade to a stone benchtop at a later date; in most cases, there is no need to replace any base cabinets, doors, panel and drawers in order to upgrade to a stone benchtop unless there is damage.
Laminate benchtops are typically made by compressing the layer of reinforced plastic, a decorative paper sheet and a block of engineered wood such as moisture resistant particleboard or medium density fibreboard (aka MDF). It is the decorative paper sheet which gives the laminate the colour, patterns and texture. Current research and development have made laminate benchtop to mimic the look of granite or marble.
In Australia, there are very strict standards which laminate benchtops manufacturers have to adhere to. This standard (AS2924.1) has requirements which relate to anti-microbial properties, fire resistance and resistance to wear. So if you are shopping for laminate benchtop, just ask where it coming from and that it’s not some cheap import which does not meet the requirements of the Australian Standard.
Laminate Benchtops are susceptible to damage when exposed to heat, so do not put any hot pans or pots on them. They are also susceptible to scratches, so do not cut directly on the laminate benchtop.
